(all worksheets have necessary diagrams)
12) GLANDULAR TISSUES
Glands are structures specialised in the elaboration of various substances (for example proteins, fats, hormones). The production of substances that are to be let out by cells for different purposes is called secretion. Glands are classified according to the destination of their secretion product. Exocrine glands secrete on the outer surface or in cavities communicating to the outside of the body. Endocrine glands secrete directly in blood vessels. Study the prepared slide number 4.
Microscope, scissors, glass dish, pipette, slide, gauze, 250 cc beaker,1 elastic band, 400 cc beaker, sugar, spoon with spatula, water, set of dyes, liver
Buy a piece of fresh liver from the butcher. Cut it using the scissors and place it in the small beaker. Press it using the spatula, as shown in figure 27.
Add sugared water (prepared by dissolving 2 teaspoons full of sugar for 100 cc of water). Continue to grind the liver until the mixture becomes brick-red in colour.
Step 3
Prepare the second beaker, covering it with the gauze (held in place by the elastic). Filter the mixture (see figure 28).
Draw a few drops of the filtered mixture with the pipette. Drip it onto the glass dish, add a drop of eosin from the set of dyes, then cover with a second slide. Observe under the microscope.
